Editor’s Note: We’ve been exploring the lack of female representation in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, and celebrating the positive steps women have taken in STEM. The first installment of this month-long project can be found here.

Engineering is a fascinating field, and although it is male-dominated, there’s more encouragement than ever for women to push the boundaries.  Even actress Natalie Portman, whose real-life scientific research has been formally published, teamed up with Marvel Comics last year to launch a contest for teenage girls to inspire their interests in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

If you look back in history, you will find many inspiring women who have made significant impacts in the world of engineering. Scroll through the slideshow below for a glimpse at early STEM trailblazers — plus a few of today’s company and industry leaders.
