Name: Karen L. Garvey

Business: Intent, LLC, a provider of life-guidance and professional coaching to help achieve happiness

Industry: Coaching & Consulting

Location: New York, New York, U.S.

Reason for starting: Like so many women, I had had a difficult childhood, but I managed to achieve success in business after obtaining my MBA. Regardless of my external achievements, however, I found myself relatively unhappy as the shadows of a painful childhood claimed my joy. My course changed on 9/11/2001 when I “received” simultaneous information about what was occurring, my first experience learning something not through earthly means. As one dominated by left-brain activity, the experience was mind-opening. Over time through scientific means, I discovered how to intentionally attune to this connection, and through this conduit to universal knowledge, I learned how to be happy for the first time in my life. It was inevitable then that I wanted as many people as possible to know that happiness could be learned and to share techniques to get there. Today, I provide ongoing insights for workshops, media appearances, coaching, and books. It is deeply satisfying that I have been able to guide thousands of people to becoming happier – not just experiencing the absence of pain, but true sustained happiness.

How do you define success? It is simple – success is happiness. Happiness can be achieved through shedding others’ misbeliefs, limitations, and expectations. Releasing that burden allows you to discover the essence of who you really are, and find amazing power to create harmony in your relationship with yourself, with your body, with others, and with abundance.

Biggest Success: Well, of course, my biggest success is being happy. Some of my favorite external successes include authoring 5 books, raising confident children, and reaching people through the media, with appearances on shows like the Dr. Oz Show.

What is your top challenge and how have you addressed it? My top challenge is to develop a skill set in marketing. My passion and workload are overflowing, yet in order to convert my business model to reach more people in less time, it’s critical to have an outstanding, comprehensive marketing program in place.

Who is your most important role model? Trailblazers help me ignite my courage, inspiration, and limitlessness. The trailblazer who has personally influenced me the most is Gloria Steinem. Having had the privilege of spending time with Ms. Steinem, I came to appreciate her intelligence, as well as her broad view of today’s challenges and possibilities. Although her methods sparked controversy at times, she was keenly aware that in promoting women’s rights, extreme stances were necessary to swing the pendulum from discrimination to respect.
