Name: Kristin Marquet

Business: Creative Development Agency, LLC , a PR and Marketing agency for beauty and lifestyle brands

Industry: Marketing & PR

Location: New York, New York, U.S.

Reason for starting: I started my business back in 2009 because I was laid off during the financial crisis from my full-time job where I was a communications manager for a management consulting firm. After I was laid off, I had looked for employment for several months but was unsuccessful in securing a position that paid enough to cover my daily living expenses.

How do you define success? I think success is reaching a comfortable lifestyle where someone is happy with both his/her personal and professional lives. I’ve achieved my own definition of success and true happiness. I have a thriving public relations agency that serves some of today’s newest fashion and beauty brands. My first book hit the Amazon bestseller list two weeks ago. I’ve also married my best friend. I’m very fortunate to be in this position.

Biggest success: My biggest successes are starting my business on a $500.00 budget and growing it to six figures as well as my first book becoming an Amazon bestseller.

What is your top challenge and how have you addressed it? The biggest challenge is finding the right employees. Although someone looks great on paper and their references check out, it’s difficult to know their capabilities without seeing how they perform on the job. Despite the ever-changing business environment, my original business vision has not changed very much in the last five years. I’ve been able to maintain a clear and consistent vision.

Who is your most important role model? My most important role model is my father. He taught me how to be an entrepreneur, why I should pursue my passion, how to never settle for less, as well as the importance of work/life balance.
