Your Name: Audrey Bell-Kearney
Business Name: Ms. Boss Media, a media and marketing consulting firm
Type of Business: Arts & Entertainment
Business Location: Lawrenceville, Georgia, United States
Reason for starting
I started my business because I was a single parent and I wanted to create a good life for my daughter. I hated my job at the time and every day I went to work I felt like I was losing myself. Finally one day I went to work and could not come out of the bathroom. When I finally came out my brother had to come and pick me up because I was so depressed. When I went back to work my job went on strike and I never went back. That was 14 years ago.
How do you define success?
To be success is freedom. Freedom to do all of the things you want to do when you want to do them and with whom you want to do them.
My biggest success is raising my daughter while I was building my business. When I started she was 8 years old. She is now 22 a senior in college about to graduate with a bachelors in business and become my VP.
What is your top challenge and how have you addressed it?
My top challenge has been trying to build a team. I’ve found that unless you have the money to pay people they will only hang on to your dream for a short time. This was very frustrating for me, so what I decided to do was hire virtual assistants when I needed something to be done. This way I could pay per project and not have to delegate to someone who was supposed be on my team, but was really there because this thing was easy and I was going to become rich and they would to without putting in the work.
Who is your most important role model?
Madam CJ Walker. Her picture hangs over my desk. I think of the legacy she built in the early 1900’s when there were no resources like we have now. She took an idea and a lot of hard work and built an empire and a legacy that still lives on and will continue to live on.
