She’s Helping Cocktail Enthusiasts Level Up Their Home Bar
Bilqees Grant’s company, Helius Originals, makes luxury barware products that infuse cocktails (and food) with a rich, smoky flavor.
Canadian entrepreneur Bilqees Grant launched her company, Helius Originals, in December of 2021, with the goal of selling products that could best be described as “sustainable luxury.” Grant offers a range of smoke kits, that help users infuse cocktails and food alike with a smoky flavor – flavor notes traditionally only achievable in commercial kitchens or by professional mixologists. But Grant’s kits aren’t just focused on helping the home bartender level up their cocktail game – she is also dedicated to ensuring all her barware sets are made from reclaimed wood and upcycled materials, so customers don’t have to sacrifice sustainability in the pursuit of a fancy beverage.
Here’s our lightly edited Q&A, from The Story Exchange 1,000+ Stories Project.
How is your business different from others in your industry?
Our smoke sets can be used for both food and drinks. The products themselves are made from eco-friendly materials like reclaimed wood, but do not compromise on craftsmanship.
Tell us about your biggest success so far.
Entering the business-to-business space and securing four corporate gifting partnerships in our first month of operations. We have also expanded internationally by establishing a warehousing hub in Madrid. These achievements have validated our brand and positioned us for significant growth.
What is your top challenge and how have you addressed it?
Navigating the complexities of scaling production, while still maintaining our commitment to sustainability and luxury craftsmanship. As demand for our products grew, it became difficult to find suppliers who could meet our standards. To address this, we invested in building stronger relationships with local suppliers who share our values, ensuring consistent access to reclaimed and FSC-certified materials.
Have you experienced any significant personal situations that have affected your business decisions?
I was a basketball player when I was younger, which exposed me to situations where coaches were not always professional – and at times, crossed boundaries. These experiences taught me the importance of finding my voice. In the past, I stayed quiet about situations that deserved to be addressed. Now, if something feels inappropriate or doesn’t sit right with me, I’m not afraid to speak up.
What is your biggest tip for other startup entrepreneurs?
Embrace adaptability, and be open to change. When I first started, I thought having a clear plan was everything – but in reality, success comes from being able to pivot quickly when things don’t go as planned. Surround yourself with people who challenge your ideas and give honest feedback, and never be afraid to shift directions if something isn’t working.
How do you find inspiration on your darkest days?
My family, in particular my brother, who moved to Japan and taught himself a new language. His journey reminds me that perseverance and self-belief can help you meet any challenge. Additionally, my co-founder is also my boyfriend, so I have the unique privilege of leaning on him in both life and business.
What is your go-to song to get motivated on tough days?
“I’m Every Woman” by Whitney Houston.
Who is your most important role model?
Devon Jones, the founder of YAAACE, a charity that supports at-risk youth. He believed in me when I was a troubled kid, and has shown me the power of mentorship and community support. His dedication to empowering marginalized youth continues to inspire me as I strive to make a positive impact through my business and community work.
