How She Turned One Rescue Dog’s Struggles Into a Pet Wellness Brand

Chloe Clark, the founder of Simply Sage Dog Treats, has carved out a niche for herself by addressing the wellness needs of pets. Based in Norcross, Georgia, her business specializes in crafting all-natural skincare and grooming products tailored for dogs and cats with allergies and skin issues. Chloe’s journey began with her rescue dog, Sage, whose own health challenges inspired a holistic approach to pet care. Simply Sage Dog Treats offers a range of products—from paw and nose balms to itch-relief shampoo bars—crafted without harsh chemicals or preservatives. Chloe’s mission is clear: to provide pets with effective, natural solutions that ensure their well-being and comfort.

Here’s our lightly edited Q&A, from The Story Exchange 1,000+ Stories Project.

How is your business different from others in your industry?

Our products are crafted with a holistic approach, utilizing a limited range of all-natural ingredients without the use of chemicals or preservatives, making them ideal for pets with sensitive skin and allergies. These products are purpose-driven and results-focused, created to solve real issues for my own dog, Sage, and are still made in small batches to ensure quality. We specialize in skin health and allergy support rather than offering a general one-size-fits-all solution. We also prioritize transparency and trust, offering a 30-day money-back guarantee so customers feel confident in their purchase.

Tell us about your biggest success so far.

Gaining both industry recognition and national media attention for our creative approach to pet wellness. The brand was recognized by Animal Wellness Magazine with the Best of Innovation Pet Products award in the Grooming & Hygiene category in both 2023 and 2024, highlighting its commitment to creating effective, natural solutions for pets.

In addition to these accolades, we have been featured in well-known publications such as Modern Dog Magazine, Country Living Magazine, BuzzFeed Pets, Smart Retailer, Houston Pet Talk Magazine, and Animal Radio, further establishing its credibility and reach. These milestones reflect not only the quality of the products but also the growing demand for holistic, results-driven pet care solutions.

What is your top challenge and how have you addressed it?

Growing Simply Sage Dog Treats has not been easy, especially when it comes to sales and marketing. I’ve found that social media and digital ads often draw people looking for entertainment rather than those ready to make a purchase, which makes consistent growth challenging. Being in a crowded market of many small businesses relying on free platforms has not helped much either. What has really worked for us is taking a more hands-on, strategic approach, pitching for press features, getting included in product gift guides, and being featured in both regional and national publications. Expanding into online marketplaces and partnering with pet-focused nonprofits has also helped us connect with pet owners who truly value our products while building trust and credibility along the way.

Have you experienced any significant personal situations that have affected your business decisions?

Entrepreneurship can often feel like a lonely journey, with very few people truly in your corner. I know firsthand how the opinions of others, sometimes even family and friends, can become hurdles, with some checking in just to see if you’ve failed yet. But I’ve also been fortunate to have loved ones who cheer me on, lift me up during tough times, and remind me to keep going when I feel defeated.

Being an entrepreneur in a world that often values conformity can feel like being a small boat alone in the middle of the sea, without anyone to relate to or guide you. That’s part of why I became a SCORE business mentor. For over eight years, I’ve had the privilege of being that supportive voice for other entrepreneurs, offering encouragement, guidance, and advice on critical business decisions. I understand the challenges of having limited support while chasing your passion, and I strive to be the kind of mentor I wish I had along the way.

What is your biggest tip for other startup entrepreneurs?

If there’s one skill that can truly transform your business and set you apart, it’s learning how to sell. Many people think selling is sleazy or requires a natural “gift” for persuasion, and I’ve heard countless business owners say, “I’m not a salesperson” or “I’m just not good at selling.” Often, these beliefs come from years of being bombarded with complicated sales strategies or courses promising to turn you into a “top salesperson.” The truth is, in the early stages of your business, you don’t need to master sales; you need a simple, straightforward way to let people know what you offer and why it matters.

At its core, selling is simply sharing your offerings and showing their value. It doesn’t have to be intimidating or complicated; it’s about having conversations, expressing your passion, and meeting people’s needs. By focusing on your clients, asking thoughtful questions, and practicing your approach, you’ll naturally grow more confident and influential over time.

How do you find inspiration on your darkest days?

On my darkest days and my best days, I turn to my relationship with God for guidance and inspiration. My faith is the foundation that keeps me grounded and gives me clarity when life feels overwhelming. I spend time reading the Bible, reflecting on its teachings, and applying the lessons to my own life and decisions. Seeing how scripture offers wisdom, comfort, and direction reminds me that I’m never alone and that there is a greater plan at work, even in challenging moments. This connection fills me with hope, peace, and the strength to keep moving forward.

What is your go-to song to get motivated on tough days?

“Optimistic” by Sounds of Blackness. It uplifts me and reminds me that no matter how challenging things get, there’s always hope and a reason to keep going.

Who is your most important role model?

Before starting Simply Sage Dog Treats, I ran a food photography and food styling business, which led me to meet the amazing Chef Nancy Waldeck of Taste and Savor. Working with her on cookbooks, TV shows, cooking classes, and demos at schools and organizations taught me about business strategy, marketing, customer service, and really connecting with your target audience. Nancy has this incredible way of staying calm, making everyone feel seen, and generating excitement around whatever she’s working on. She seems to always be in the right place at the right time and truly makes the most of every opportunity.

What I admire most is her mindset as a lifelong learner, always curious, always exploring, and always striving to know more. Her energy and wisdom have been a huge inspiration to me and my journey as an entrepreneur.
