She’s Bringing Bold, Unique Visions to Bay Area Homes

Kanika Khurana draws inspiration from her international travels for the ideas executed at her interior design firm, Kanika Design.

After graduating from San Francisco State University, Kanika Khurana started her next chapter of life by decorating her first apartment – and fell in love with interior design. Sixteen years later, Khurana is still designing interiors all around the Bay Area through her firm, Kanika Design. From crafting bright and colorful homes, to creating dynamic commercial spaces, Khurana takes inspiration from the more-than 64 countries she visited and mixes those aesthetic elements into her designs. Today, the San Mateo, California, entrepreneur is committed to creating the spaces of her clients’ dreams, while also making time for her health, her hobbies and her friends.

Here’s our lightly edited Q&A, from The Story Exchange 1,000+ Stories Project.

How is your business different from others in your industry?

I listen to each client’s design ideas, so we can have open conversations about likes and dislikes – forming the trust that clients need to have in a designer. This approach leads to an enjoyable and stress-free experience.

Tell us about your biggest success so far.

Running my company for 16 years. Small businesses are extremely difficult to own and manage, but the passion I have for interior design has allowed me to succeed.

What is your top challenge and how have you addressed it?

Establishing work-life balance. I am constantly in a work mindset, thinking about everything that needs to be done. I partake in traveling because it gives me a break – while also providing inspiration for my designs.

What is your biggest tip for other startup entrepreneurs?

In professions that involve customer service, it is important to address and solve any arising issues as swiftly as possible. Quick and effective problem-solving not only ensures the client’s satisfaction, but also helps maintain a positive relationship between the service provider and the client.

Prioritizing mental health is also very important – taking time for self-care and mental well-being helps me perform well at work. In addition to that, I have a deep appreciation for the practice of meditation and breath exercises.

How do you find inspiration on your darkest days?

When I am having a hard day, distractions help. Talking to a loved one is beneficial because having a good conversation helps me feel more positive. I also engage in activities that are upbeat, such as dancing or listening to music.

What is your go-to song to get motivated on tough days?

I enjoy listening to many songs, and my choices change depending on my mood. But for the last couple of months, I’ve been inspired by Natasha Bedingfield’s “Unwritten.”

Who is your most important role model?

My brother. He is a constant source of support and inspiration in my life. Whenever I face challenges or difficult decisions, he is always there for me, offering guidance and encouragement.
