She’s Helping Busy Families Eradicate Mess and Stress
Katie McCann launched a home organization business for one simple, clutter-free reason: It’s the work she loves doing.
Nearly a decade ago, Katie McCann realized she had a knack for organizing. At the time, McCann was reevaluating what sort of work she wanted to do in general, and realized that professional organizing was a career path that would not only draw from skills developed in her past roles, but would also rescue her from sitting at a desk all day. And so the Yonkers, New York-based entrepreneur launched her company, Haven, which helps clients declutter and reorganize their homes. Today, McCann says the best part of her job is doing something that she really loves – something that comes naturally to her – and that also helps others live a more stress-free life.
Here’s our lightly edited Q&A, from The Story Exchange 1,000+ Stories Project.
How is your business different from others in your industry?
I meet people where they are, and don’t judge. I work with individuals who are going through a transition – whether that’s welcoming a baby, getting married or divorced, moving, upsizing or downsizing. I also help my clients with customized design recommendations that work for their respective spaces.
Tell us about your biggest success so far.
Working with a non-profit called Glam4Good. When I started working with them, they had such a backlog of donations that they were unable to plan for events. I came on to assess the space, create a shelving layout, strategize categories of inventory, manage deliveries and create labels. I also sorted through 28,000 donations allocated for in-house shopping and pop-up events. It was a huge project, but a big success.
What is your top challenge and how have you addressed it?
Convincing busy families – ones that are overwhelmed and frustrated by the chaos of their cluttered homes – that they should invest in my service.
Have you experienced any significant personal situations that affected your business decisions?
For the past 6 years, my husband and I have been trying to have kids. Navigating this has been heartbreaking and challenging while growing a business.
What is your biggest tip for other startup entrepreneurs?
Networking doesn’t have to feel slimy and gross. I had to change my mindset around it – but now, I view it as a genuine back-and-forth. Also, there is never going to be a perfect time to make a change – but if you do have an opportunity to reassess, take it.
How do you find inspiration on your darkest days?
This too shall pass!
What is your go-to song to get motivated on tough days?
“Colors” by Black Puma.
Who is your most important role model?
The future person I want to become.
