Her Picnic Set Makes Outdoor Dining Easy – and a Vibe
Nikki King’s Lax & Daisy company makes luxe picnic sets designed to turn your picnics into an aesthetic experience.
A few years ago, Nikki King quit her corporate job, sold most of her belongings and adopted a nomadic lifestyle that prioritizes experiences over things. King says that “stepping out of the ‘matrix’ … was a scary and uncertain move,” but that she had to take the leap because, “I knew I wanted more.” Not long after changing courses, King launched her business, Lax & Daisy, which produces a line of high-end picnic sets stored inside of colorful print backpacks. They come with every accessory one could need for a meal outside. King, who now splits her time between Austin, Texas, and Los Angeles, says it is her mission to get people outside and into the sunshine, because she believes in its transformative and restorative power. She’s presently focused on expanding her company while looking out for the well-being of the world’s employees, in part by offering discounts to any employers who give their staff ample chances to get outside during the average work day.
Here’s our lightly edited Q&A, from The Story Exchange 1,000+ Stories Project.
How is your business different from others in your industry?
Our commitment to quality and thoughtful design, with a deeper mission. While many competitors focus solely on function, we go further by using high-end materials to ensure that our products are durable, aesthetically pleasing, and built to last.
Beyond the products themselves, we’re focused on driving real change in workplace wellness. We’ve introduced the “Team Sunshine Pledge,” a commitment that tasks corporations with prioritizing employee well-being, encouraging time outside, and creating healthier, happier work environments. This approach isn’t just about selling products — it’s about inspiring systemic change.
Tell us about your biggest success so far.
Taking a leap of faith and leaving the security of my corporate job to pursue a life of adventure, purpose, and connection with nature. I wanted to grow, expand and take risks that would create long-term joy and freedom – not just for me, but for those who resonate with this mission. I didn’t want to look back at life and regret waiting until retirement to truly live. I strive to inspire others to carve their own paths toward a life of meaning and sunshine.
What is your top challenge and how have you addressed it?
Being entirely self-funded has been both my biggest challenge and my greatest opportunity for growth. It can feel daunting at times — there’s no safety net, and every decision carries weight. However, I also find it exciting and empowering to fully invest in myself and my vision. And in moments of doubt or fear, I turn inward. I’ve learned to quiet my mind, tap into my intuition, and take inspired action based on what my inner voice tells me.
Have you experienced any significant personal situations that have affected your business decisions?
In a previous job, I witnessed a company mistreating its employees – particularly women – and it left a lasting impact on me. I knew I wanted to be part of the change, to build something that values people, prioritizes well-being, and proves that success doesn’t have to come at the cost of humanity. Beyond that, I realized the world desperately needs more women rising up as entrepreneurs and leaders. When women step into leadership roles, it creates space for new ideas, innovation, and systems of care that challenge outdated norms.
What is your biggest tip for other startup entrepreneurs?
Build something that truly lights up your soul. Don’t just look for a gap in the market and try to fill it — find the thing that excites you, energizes you, and keeps you up at night with possibility. When your work aligns with your passion, you’ll have the motivation to push through even the toughest days. Challenges will come, but if you believe deeply in your mission, it won’t feel like work — it will feel like purpose.
How do you find inspiration on your darkest days?
I turn to nature, because it reminds me that we are never truly alone. Sometimes it’s as simple as placing my hand on a tree and feeling its strength — its roots run deep, grounding me in a way that nothing else can. Other times, I’ll go to the ocean, stand at the shoreline, and say hello to the waves. The ocean feels alive, like a powerful friend reminding me of the vastness of the world and the endless possibilities it holds. These moments remind me that I’m part of something bigger, something supportive and timeless.
What is your go-to song to get motivated on tough days?
“Love“ by Facesoul. The lyrics, “Step into the moment, let yourself free now, all you need is love to find your way,” have a way of grounding me and reminding me to let go of whatever is holding me back. It’s a reminder to trust the journey, find freedom in the present moment, and know that love will always guide me forward.
Who is your most important role model?
Without question, my mom. I watched her overcome incredible odds to rebuild her life when I was little — going back to school and starting her own business while navigating the aftermath of abuse. Her strength, resilience, and determination taught me that no matter the circumstances, we have the power to create a new path for ourselves. She is a living example of perseverance, and has shown me that success isn’t just about reaching goals — it’s about staying true to yourself and rising above challenges with grace and perseverance.
