She Turned Her Skin Struggles Into a Clean Sunscreen Brand
Frustrated with irritating sunscreens, beauty industry veteran Danvi Gill launched Cove Suncare to create the clean-mineral SPF for sensitive skin that she needed.
Danvi Gill spent years struggling to find a sunscreen that wouldn’t inflame her sensitive, eczema-prone skin. Most products either irritated her skin, or felt heavy and greasy – she dreaded putting them on every day. A few terrible products (and sunburns) later, Gill decided it was time to draw on her background in cosmetic sourcing and create her own solution to the problem. In 2025, the Hayward, California-based founder launched Cove Suncare, a line of dermatologist-tested, cruelty-free sunscreens designed specifically for sensitive skin. Today, Gill is working to expand her business while also raising her twins, telling us she stays on top of everything by “creating structured routines, staying organized, and reminding myself why I started the brand in the first place.”
Here’s our lightly edited Q&A, from The Story Exchange 1,000+ Stories Project.
How is your business different from others in your industry?
The brand was created from a deeply personal experience with eczema-prone skin, and the frustration of not being able to find sunscreen that felt comfortable to wear consistently.
After experiencing a severe sunburn before my engagement party because I avoided SPF that irritated my skin, I realized there was a real gap in the market for mineral sunscreen that felt gentle, wearable and approachable. A few years later, after becoming a mother to twins, that mission became even more important. I wanted to create sunscreen that felt safe, gentle and trustworthy – something people could feel confident using on themselves and the people they care about most. That perspective has shaped every part of our development as a company.
Also, my background in cosmetic sourcing allows me to create formulas that combine effective mineral sun protection with skin-conscious ingredients and comfortable textures people actually want to wear daily.
Tell us about your biggest success so far.
Turning an idea into a fully developed brand with professionally formulated products, growing social engagement, retail interest and a loyal, early community – all while navigating the challenges of being a first-time founder and new mother to twins.
What I’m most proud of, though, is building a brand that genuinely resonates with people because it was created from a real personal need. Seeing people connect with the mission behind Cove Suncare – and trust us with products they use on themselves and their families – has been incredibly rewarding and validating.
What is your top challenge and how have you addressed it?
Building a startup while simultaneously raising twins. I started the company when they were just 8 months old. Learning how to balance motherhood and entrepreneurship required a lot of discipline, adaptability, and time management.
Have you experienced any significant personal situations that have affected your business decisions?
After having my twins, I became much more conscious about the ingredients and products I was using daily, which pushed me to create sunscreen formulas that felt safe, gentle and trustworthy for both adults and children with sensitive skin.
My previous work experience in cosmetic sourcing also gave me firsthand insight into available ingredients, formulation standards, supplier relationships and product development, so I could approach building Cove Suncare with a much stronger understanding of the broader beauty industry.
How do you find inspiration on your darkest days?
I usually come back to the reason why I started in the first place. My family, especially my twins, remind me that I’m building something bigger than myself, and that keeps me grounded even during the overwhelming moments. I also think back to how frustrating it was growing up with sensitive skin and feeling like I had to choose between protecting myself and avoiding irritation. Remembering those experiences — and knowing they led me to create something I genuinely believe in — helps me stay motivated and keeps me moving forward.
What is your biggest tip for other startup entrepreneurs?
Start before you feel completely ready. In the beginning, I thought I needed everything to be perfect before launching, but I’ve learned that so much of entrepreneurship comes from learning as you go and adapting quickly. I also wish I had known how important consistency is. Building a business takes time, and growth usually happens much slower and in a less linear fashion than people expect, so staying patient and continuing to show up every day is incredibly important.
What is your go-to song to get motivated on tough days?
“Ready to Go (Get Me Out of My Mind)” by Panic! At The Disco.
Who is your most important role model?
My dad and uncle, because they both taught me the value of hard work, consistency and perseverance from a young age. Watching them work tirelessly to provide for their families shaped the way I approach both life and business. As a founder and mother, I carry that same mindset into building my company: Showing up every day, even when things are challenging, and staying committed to creating something meaningful for my family and future.
