She was living in an RV with her toddler-aged daughter, and her then-husband was unable to support them financially. Wilcox dove headfirst into the breadwinner role, piecing together a plan to make a living using only her laptop and a shoddy WiFi connection. And she succeeded – eight years later, Liz Wilcox has over 4,000 paid subscribers, largely fellow entrepreneurs, to a mentorship program that teaches them how to increase their sales through email marketing. Today, the Orlando-based mompreneur is proud to help others build their businesses – and to have achieved financial independence for herself and her family. Here's our lightly edited Q&A, from The Story Exchange 1,000+ Stories Project. How is your business different from others in your industry? It's affordable. I know how hard it is when you lack guidance while starting a business. I want to be a co-pilot for those who were in my shoes. And that’s exactly what I do – all while making 90’s pop culture references and ending my days at 2:30 p.m. to take my daughter to the beach. I'm living my dream, and I want to help others do the same. Tell us about your biggest success so far. I’ve heard email marketers say that a 1% to 2% conversion rate is good – and it floored me. I couldn't believe anyone would profess that to be a “good” rate. By comparison, my first course had a 100% conversion rate, which yielded 141 sales and $17,000. I made it my mission to teach others how to convert sales through email. Also, I'm proud of taking 90 days off – consecutively – last year. What is your top challenge and how have you addressed it? I suffered a traumatic brain injury in June 2022, just as my business was growing exponentially. It forced me to double down on my "why" – which is to create a business that can survive without me working in it every minute of my life. I had to design a life that supported my health, my family, and my need to earn money. I went as bare bones as possible – and it turned out that, for me, simplicity leads to scaling. Have you experienced any significant personal situations that affected your business decisions? When I started my business, I had no choice but to succeed. I either made money, or my mom's rent didn't get paid. What is your biggest tip for other startup entrepreneurs? Double down on one thing that “works” for you. In my case, it's been email. How do you find inspiration on your darkest days? I ask myself two questions. First, what would this look like if it was easy? And then, what would it look like if it was fun? In answering those, I can get myself out of the dark. What is your go-to song to get motivated on tough days? "Pop" by NSYNC. Who is your most important role model? Myself. I am able to support my mom, my sister and other loved ones because of the business I've built from nothing.
