Via her Instagram account, the comedian shared that she recently had both her uterus and her appendix surgically removed to combat her endometriosis. “The doctor found 30 spots of endometriosis that he removed,” she said in a video. “He removed my appendix because the endometriosis had attacked it." Endometriosis is a disease that causes tissue similar to uterine lining to grow outside of the uterus, resulting in chronic pain and inflammation. Roughly 1 in 10 people are affected, with symptoms ranging from painful periods and heavy bleeding to infertility. With these public posts, Schumer hopes to let others know that they don’t have to live with any of that. She noted, in a second video, that she feels hopeful following the procedure. “I think it’s gonna change my life,” she says. This is not the first time she’s gotten candid about her health issues, often on Instagram. Before the birth of her son in 2019, Schumer documented her struggles with hyperemesis gravidarum, a condition that causes severe nausea and vomiting during pregnancy. Earlier this year, she also discussed her IVF journey publicly. Much like she's done in the past, Schumer hopes to once again empower women to seek out the medical care and answers they need -- and to let them know they’re not alone. “Woman are made to feel like they are just supposed to ‘tough it out,’ but that is bullsh*t,” she added in the second post-surgery video’s caption. “We have a right to live pain-free.” (Featured image credit: 92YTribeca, Flickr)
