When Ortiz’s son was suffering from severe skin allergies, she became determined to create nourishing products to soothe him. Along the way, she enlisted her sister’s help – the beginnings of what would ultimately become their joint business, Earth’s Farmacy. Today, Ortiz and Raj are handcrafting a full line of body scrubs, soaps and bath soaks that are infused with crystal energy – as well as offering healing services that help women safely rebalance, recharge and invest in their well-being. Here's our lightly edited Q&A, from The Story Exchange 1,000+ Stories Project. How is your business different from others? We use different energy-healing modalities in the creation of our products, and offer coaching. Using our products is an experience suited to many different kinds of women – from the busy mom who still wants to take care of her skin, to the female CEO who is always in between meetings and on the go. They’re also ideal for any woman who is seeking clarity, self-care, guidance, and some good vibes. Tell us about your biggest success so far. The positive feedback we have received from people who use our products and book our energy-healing services. When we started out, we knew the benefits of our body care products and energy healing – but we were uncertain of how well our passion would resonate with other women. The more we got out into our local community and connected with our target market, the clearer it became that we are building a company that is truly helping women. What is your top challenge and how have you addressed it? Sales and marketing. We are natural creators, so the easiest part for us is creating the products and services themselves. But staying consistent and continuing to reach further into the marketplace is proving tough. Local events have been wonderful – however, that is not sustainable as the only outreach avenue for our company. Have you experienced any significant personal situations that have affected your business decisions? We have not – and we believe that is due to the love and support we have for each other, and from our families. What is your biggest tip for other startup entrepreneurs? Success doesn't happen overnight. Being an entrepreneur has many ups and downs, and moments of questioning whether you are making the right decision. It is important to remember your “why.” How do you find inspiration on your darkest days? Laughter. Remembering why we started. Thinking about the positive feedback we have received. Leaning on each other in moments when one of us is struggling. What is your go-to song to get motivated on tough days? Anything uplifting and optimistic! Who is your most important role model? Sarah Blakely, the founder of Spanx, is an amazing role model for women – especially female entrepreneurs. She never gave up, and she always found ways to hustle and built an empire. Now, she is one of the most successful female CEOs of our generation – and she is a mom.
