Dalya Harel started her business out of necessity. In 1985, she found herself thrust into the role of sole provider for her family of nine children, and needed to find a way to support them. When Harel’s children got head lice, she found that many of the available treatments either contained harmful chemicals, or simply weren’t effective. So Harel came up with her own solution, and launched Lice Busters out of her kitchen nearly 40 years ago to pedal it. Over the years, the New York City-based entrepreneur has grown her business – she now has multiple locations across the five boroughs of the city, where families can find safe, effective and stress-free lice removal services for their kids. Here's our lightly edited Q&A, from The Story Exchange 1,000+ Stories Project. How is your business different from others in your industry? We use all-natural, non-toxic methods to remove lice, ensuring that our treatments are safe for children and adults. We offer a personalized approach, full of support and compassion, because we understand how stressful dealing with lice can be for families. We also provide education and advice to help prevent future infestations, empowering parents. Our extensive experience and proven track record also set us apart. With over three decades in the industry, we have successfully treated thousands of families, earning their trust and loyalty. Tell us about your biggest success so far. Expanding from a small kitchen operation to a widely recognized company with multiple locations throughout New York City. I started with limited resources and faced numerous challenges – I grew the business through hard work, dedication and a commitment to excellence. What is your top challenge and how have you addressed it? Overcoming stigma and misconceptions about head lice. Many people feel embarrassed or ashamed about lice infestations, which makes them hesitant to seek professional help. This stigma has been a barrier to reaching those who needed our services the most. Have you experienced any significant personal situations that affected your business decisions? Losing one of my children to cancer. This heartbreaking experience reshaped my perspective on life – and business. Losing a child is an unimaginable pain, and it brought a profound sense of urgency and purpose to my work. I realized how precious time is, and how important it is to make a positive impact on others. The loss reinforced my commitment to helping families through difficult times, while also making me more empathetic and dedicated. What is your biggest tip for other startup entrepreneurs? When I started, I faced many challenges and uncertainties. Looking back, there are a few things I wish I had known that would have made the journey easier: Stay persistent. There will be obstacles and setbacks, but persistence is key. Seek support: Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Surround yourself with supportive people who believe in your vision. Focus on customer needs: Providing excellent service and building trust with your clients will set you apart from competitors. Embrace learning: The business world is constantly changing, and staying informed will help you stay ahead. Maintain balance: Running a business can be all-consuming, but it’s important to maintain a balance between work and personal life. Taking care of yourself will help you stay energized and motivated. How do you find inspiration on your darkest days? By reflecting on my journey. I think about why I started Lice Busters — to provide for my family and help others dealing with lice. Remembering this purpose reignites my passion and drive. My children and loved ones are also a constant source of strength. Their support and love remind me that I’m not alone, and that my work has a real impact. What is your go-to song to get motivated on tough days? “Do You Love Me?” by Sharif Dean. It reminds me of my childhood and the dreams I used to have. Who is your most important role model? My mother. Both of my parents were orphans, and my mother, in particular, faced incredible hardships – always with grace and determination. Despite having limited resources and many challenges, she always found ways to provide for our family. She instilled in me the values of hard work, perseverance and compassion.
