When Ekaterina Mironova first arrived in the U.S. three years ago, she was starting from scratch. As Mironova, who moved here from Russia, learned English and went back to school for another degree, she also launched her Los Angeles -based beauty salon, Via Venice Beauty. Mironova got a crash course in small business management when she started up, but her exceptional time management skills helped her persevere through the grueling process. Today, Mironova is proud of her salon, which provides nail, hair and skin treatments for customers – as well as a quiet respite, especially of late. The Los Angeles wildfires did affect business for a few days, she said – but then, Via Venice Beauty became a haven for customers seeking safety and relaxation. Here's our lightly edited Q&A, from The Story Exchange 1,000+ Stories Project. How is your business different from others in your industry? We work to create an unparalleled personalized experience for each client, and have built lasting relationships with them based on trust and exceptional service. Additionally, we've incorporated European quality standards with an emphasis on natural products and techniques. Tell us about your biggest success so far. Building a business and career from scratch in a new country. I started with only basic knowledge of English, but have since become fluent and started a business. Each accomplishment reflects my resilience, adaptability and determination to succeed. What is your top challenge and how have you addressed it? Three years ago, I moved to the United States and left behind everything I had built in Russia. Adapting to a new language, culture and professional landscape was a significant challenge – as was the process of finding myself. Often, this journey involved misunderstandings and a need to learn things from scratch. Together with my co-founder, we not only navigated this transition, but also obtained professional licenses to ensure we could support our employees at every stage of their work. In our business, we wore many hats at the beginning — acting as leaders, office managers, cleaners, publicists, and even practitioners when needed. This hands-on experience gave us a deep understanding of every aspect of the service we provide. These challenges shaped me into a more dynamic leader, and allowed me to build a business grounded in empathy, adaptability and a commitment to excellence. Have you experienced any significant personal situations that have affected your business decisions? Moving to the U.S. and leaving behind a stable life and career in Russia. And during this transition, I made the decision to pursue another degree. Balancing the continuation of my education, building a business and navigating a new environment gave me a deeper understanding of perseverance and time management. These experiences also influenced my decision-making in business – I became more focused on creating a supportive environment for my employees and customers. What is your biggest tip for other startup entrepreneurs? Embrace learning and adaptability as core principles. Starting a business is a journey filled with challenges, and being willing to learn from mistakes and adjust your approach is essential. Don’t be afraid to try new things and make mistakes along the way — every failure is a step toward growth and success. How do you find inspiration on your darkest days? By looking back at everything I’ve already accomplished, and reminding myself of the progress I’ve made. Reflecting on how far I’ve come gives me the strength to face new challenges. I’m also deeply motivated by the people who have told me, “You’re inspiring,” or “You’ve shown me not to give up.” Knowing that my journey has encouraged others, pushes me to keep moving forward. What is your go-to song to get motivated on tough days? Ambient music. Its calming effect helps me clear my mind and strategize solutions. Who is your most important role model? The resilient individuals I’ve met throughout my journey — colleagues, employees and friends. They inspire me to find innovative solutions, push boundaries and lead with empathy.
