Katie Couric is joining the ranks of celebs like Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon and Jenna Bush Hager by launching her own book club. (Credit: Flickr) Katie Couric is the latest celebrity name to get into the book club game. The journalist and former ABC News anchor has launched Katie Couric’s Book Club, or KCBC for short, and she chose Virginia Evans’ novel The Correspondent, a breakout hit already in its 14th printing about a woman who details her life through letters, as her first pick. Couric is joining the ranks of fellow book-club celebs Reese Witherspoon and Jenna Bush Hager -- and of course, Book Club OG Oprah Winfrey -- to try to be less glued to her phone. "I love to read," Couric told People magazine. "And I found that keeping up with current events, scrolling social media — doomscrolling more often than not — was just taking too much of my headspace and not leaving me with enough time to read great books." Of course, she’s not alone. “I think a lot of people are feeling they spend too much time on their phones,” Couric continued. “It’s not just a problem for teenagers, it’s a problem for adults too.” Members can join Couric’s book club through her Substack, and she has invited Evans to participate in an author talk for the inaugural book club meeting Monday. For future book club picks, she said she’ll stick mostly with fiction “because I read so much about what’s happening in the world,” but she plans to crowdsource selections from her audience as well. "I'm just going to pick one and hope that people like it and that they're excited by it," she said.
