The “Drivers License” singer recently announced her plans to donate a portion of ticket sales from her GUTS World Tour toward fighting for reproductive justice. Specifically, the money will go to Fund 4 Good, an initiative she just launched to build “an equitable and just future for women and girls,” its website says. Rodrigo made the pronouncement on TikTok, addressing her 19.3 million followers ahead of the opening performance of her tour, which took place in Palm Springs, California. “Before I pop onstage, I wanted to come on here and talk about something I’m really excited about,” she said, before introducing Fund 4 Good to fans as an organization that “works to support all women, girls and people seeking reproductive health freedom.” She added: “The fund will directly support community-based nonprofits that champion things like girls’ education, support reproductive rights and prevent gender-based violence.” Another part of the ticket sales from the North American leg of her tour – which will take her through anti-abortion states like Texas and Ohio, as well as cities like Montreal and New York – will be given to the National Network of Abortion Funds, a U.S. nonprofit that seeks to eliminate economic and logistical barriers that keep people from getting the abortions they need. That assistance could prove vital. The average cost of a first-trimester abortion in the U.S. is $625 – prohibitive in and of itself, in a country where 62% of people are living paycheck to paycheck. But since the reversal of Roe v. Wade, and the resulting lack of abortion access in numerous states, one in five people seeking an abortion have also had to travel to get the procedure done, adding another layer of difficulty. Though the need is greater now than ever, this is not the first time Rodrigo has spoken out on the subject. In June 2022, when the Supreme Court first knocked down Roe v. Wade, she told concert-goers at that year’s Glastonbury music festival that “I’m devastated and terrified that so many women and so many girls are going to die because of this.” In her more recent TikTok video, Rodrigo said to her fans of their engagement with her pro-abortion work: “Thank you so much for supporting this cause that I care so deeply about. I can’t wait to see you all on tour.” Rodrigo will be performing in the U.S. and Canada until mid-April, before continuing her tour in Europe.
