Lending a Paw to Animal Rescues in Detroit

Temeria Heard is supporting shelters in her hometown through her apparel line, Swaggles.

Temeria Heard is a proud pet parent who wanted to find an outlet for her creativity that also provided her with a way to support animals in shelters – and dispel some long-held but inaccurate beliefs. In 2019, Heard launched Swaggles, an apparel line selling sweatshirts and tees for humans – and a range of onesies, bandanas and leashes for their furry friends. For every item sold, Heard donates a portion of the profits to a number of shelters, rescues, and humane societies in Detroit, and throughout Michigan. As her business has grown, Heard has had to learn how to balance her full-time job running a marketing company with her work for Swaggles – especially as she hopes to expand both her line and her team.

Here’s our lightly edited Q&A, from The Story Exchange 1,000+ Stories Project.

How is your business different from others in your industry?

We are founded and operated by a Black woman, and our competitors are not. Through my work, I wanted to dispel the stereotype that Black people do not like dogs. It isn’t true! Yes, at one point dogs were forced to attack Black people during enslavement and the Civil Rights Era. I want to change the narrative.

Tell us about your biggest success so far.

Seeing the difference that our work makes in animal’s lives, whether it’s donating for igloo housing, vaccinations or to funds that promote animal rescues in general.

What is your top challenge and how have you addressed it?

Spreading the word. We use social media, but it has been difficult. I truly believe if we get one opportunity to get Swaggles into the national spotlight, that everyone will see the vision we have. Plus, in addition to running Swaggles, I also own a marketing company. Trying to balance the two can be a challenge at times, but I am committed to growing both.

What is your biggest tip for other startup entrepreneurs?

Surround yourself with supportive people – but also, keep some of your ideas and dreams to yourself, until they come to fruition. Dark and scary days are inevitable, but keep your faith and hope, and everything will happen as it’s supposed to.

How do you find inspiration on your darkest days?

I pray, and I hang out with my dog.

What is your go-to song to get motivated on tough days?

“We Gon’ Be Alright” by Tye Tribbett.

Who is your most important role model?

Oprah Winfrey. And she loves dogs.
