Name: Dr. April L. Jones, Ph.D.
Business: Visionary Consulting Services, LLC , coaching and consulting services
Industry: Coaching & Consulting
Location: Montgomery, Alabama, U.S.
Reason for starting: The initial reason for starting this business was to self-publish a book underneath a company to protect my personal assets from any legal action. After I began the entrepreneur voyage, I realized that I have what it takes to start my own company. I thought, the start-up cost was a few hundred dollars, so why not take a risk to invest in starting a consulting company. Besides I have been planning on starting a business my entire career, my thought was why not, I have the expertise, credentials, entrepreneur spirit. If not now, then when? So I started Visionary Consulting Services, LLC.
How do you define success? I define success as being the outcome of your work. Your passion and hard work will show in the successful outcomes of the people an industries where you make a difference through positive social change in the world. Success is the ability to see the impact or change in the service you are providing to individuals and organizations, that’s the best return on investment. It’s priceless, no dollar amount can define that type of success.
Biggest Success: The biggest success is having my dissertation published, then within one month expanding on the research to have it published in an international journal, Royal College of Nursing, Nurse Management Journal; and, being invited within three months of graduation to two international conferences to discuss my research to assist professionals with improvement within their workforce.
What is your top challenge and how have you addressed it? My top challenge is finding work-life balance. I have addressed it by pacing my tasks for my company and hiring volunteers to assist with administrative duties.
Who is your most important role model? The most important role model I have is my father, the honorable Mose Jones, Jr., Lawrence County Commissioner. He is my role model because as a child he showed me how to take initiative and work diligently to achieve my career and personal goals. Most of all, he taught me the importance of faith and perseverance. It is all of these qualities that are needed to be a successful entrepreneur.
